Benefits of Upcycling

With sustainable living on the rise and people the world over keen to reduce waste and embrace a more eco-orientated lifestyle; it is unsurprising that we are seeing more creative and imaginative ways of interacting with the materials around us. One of these positive trends gaining popularity is upcycling (also known as creative reuse) due to its numerous benefits.

What is Upcycling

Upcycling is the process of taking materials, objects or products and turning them into new useful components or products of increased quality or environmental value. In other words, it’s a form of recycling.

The counterpart of it is downcycling, which is all about taking objects or products and turning them into something else of decreased quality. This occurs when it is not physically or economically possible to restore items to an equal (or greater) quality than the original item.

Why Upcycle?

By upcycling, we reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. I’ve talked on occasion about why keeping rubbish from the tip is so important; they’re a horrific source of water and air pollution in the environment. One of the many reasons why the zero-waste movement is on the rise. When we upcycle, we avoid exactly this happening.

The thing is, recycling and specifically downcycling has its problems. If you recycle a bottle, the materials aren’t all reusable; in fact, most of it isn’t; by recycling the bottle, you aren’t getting another bottle out of it. You’re getting some of the materials back at best.

So, by turning that bottle into a bird feeder, storage or something else you are significantly conserving natural resources. Of course, avoiding the bottle altogether would have been best but perhaps this isn’t an option and it is just one example.

Conclusion

By taking something broken or would have been thrown out and then turning it into something else useful and productive; we save natural resources, employ creative thinking and take a more ethical approach to waste management.
