Drastic Plastic and Troublesome Trash
One thing that has been made clear of late is that when it comes to environmental awareness, recycling and household waste; there are a lot of myths and misinformation out there. It is confusing for an adult, it must be for kids too. However, there is a clear and admirable passion (even if some don’t think so) from our youth to get this right and do right by the world we live in. It is with this in mind, that I wanted to make sure the Papalites had access to good reliable age-appropriate and understandable information on the topic. I feel like Drastic Plastic and Troublesome Trash is just that.
Drastic Plastic and Troublesome Trash is an educational look at the harm that waste is causing and how this can be reduced. It is bright, colourful, full of activities and is a great reference book for kids wanting to make sense of the perils of plastic and why we adults adopt a Zero Waste mindset.

An Inverview with a 7 Year Old
Given the eldest Papalite is the one interested in the subject, I interviewed him prior to reading about environmental awareness. With multiple sources of info about plastic, I was curious as to what he knew before spending time with the book. As we both enjoy the interviews we’ve done, this seemed a good way to go.
Why do we look after the environment?
If animals eat rubbish they will die and there will be no more left in the world. Or get stuck in and hurt themselves.
All of us live here and we have to be kind and look after the animals, not hurt them and confuse them.
Do you think only animals are affected?
No. Grass, plants, trees all die.
We need them trees and plants. Animals get food and live from them.
So do we, all the vegetarians would have to eat rice or crisps or something. If you only eat crisps Papa, you’ll get sick.
If plants and animals went, would it affect people?
Yeah it would really be bad, did you know there was a fire in Australia and it hurt lots of animals, plants and people.
We need animals to love and look after and live. Hurting them isn’t fair. It isn’t nice. I don’t like it.
Why is plastic bad?
So, because… I don’t know.
Let me think.
Maybe you can’t recycle it.
Yeah, you can’t recycle it! It will be chucked out and hurt things and be there forever.
Why do we recycle?
So, the environment is safe.
Things get made into something else that you can use again. It doesn’t end up in the wild and doesn’t hurt animals or homes.
Is recycling always the best thing to do?
Yes… no, it is better to use the things again if we can. I think. No, actually; these are the same. No rubbish at all is even better though, then you don’t have to recycle or drive somewhere to get rid of stuff.
Can you take your own box or bottle to the shop? I don’t think you can but then there would be no rubbish!
Reading the Book
So, the interview confirmed what I knew. He does know and understand a lot for his age. Which is great and his empathy naturally leans towards the natural world around him. Of course there are things he doesn’t know or he applies 7 year old logic to but this is only natural.
On reading Drastic Plastic and Troubling Trash, he would focus on the images and factoids. Exclaiming delight at learning new things or questioning it against what he already thought he knew.
Finally, he decided that he would like to keep the book in bed and go back to it as and when he needs to. Im short, it was a total hit and got the Papalite thinking about how he can help the world around him.

Sounds like a great read.
This looks a great book to highlight the issues that are going on in our environment. Hopefully it will get children enthusiastic in making some changes to improve things.
We all need accurate information on this topic. As children we used to save / collect a number of items for friends of our Mum. These items went to support Charities. Can ring – pulls, silver paper, old tights, etc. We felt that it was worthwhile, as it was in an attempt to bring good :- Help / Assistance / Support, and / or a cure for conditions such as Kidney Failure, Blindness, etc.
People want to avoid negative outcomes. As well as be part of positive outcomes. But in order to do so :- Need to be kept informed. Blue Peter tv programme helped ‘Causes’, Charities, etc by getting viewers involved, and updated by showing how near they were to reaching a target that would bring a positive effect. Motivational.
We all need to do our bit to save the environment.
