That Friend
September came and our worlds grew wider,
Neither knew how little they were before,
The two of us both felt an outsider,
And formed a friendship to feel that no more,
We scoffed at the bullies who failed to know,
Laughed about teachers who never understood,
About games or computers; words would just flow,
And when things got weighty did all that we could,
You came from a place of never wanting,
The opposite of the world I had known,
Overcoming this was never daunting,
And from us both true empathy was shown.
When I look back on the days we were friends,
I wonder what stopped us from making amends.
