Simple Eco Friendly Tips to Keep Warm this Winter

Modern luxuries mean that many forget just how dangerous winter can be. The fact is though that the UK has the second-worst rate of winter related deaths in Europe. This is attributed to a number of factors and one reason you might see given is the “fuel crisis” or “fuel poverty crisis”. The idea that many can’t even afford to heat their homes. Of course there are many, many more; homelessness, lack of knowledge, accidents and so on. My point is that winter is a fatal time of year and we shouldn’t look at our own situations and deny the struggles of others. Keeping yourself and your love ones warm should take priority and focus on your safety first. So, I do not assume that everyone can afford to take a eco friendly approach to keeping warm this winter, but these tips are for those who can.

Weatherproof Your Doors and Windows

Doors and windows are natural sources of drafts. This leads to cold air getting in and hot air getting out. It comes with an ecological and an economical cost. By addressing it; you can reduce your energy bill and your carbon footprint at the same time.

Window Curtains and Netting

Thick curtains and decent netting are very efficient ways of putting extra layers between yourself and the cold. They’re also incredibly energy efficient and can be ethically sourced.

Layers

Wear jumpers. Have a dressing gown. Keep covers or single duvets in places where you are likely to (hehe) chill out. Personally, I love hiding beneath the duvet and getting lost in a book or some music.

Snuggles

Companionship is an opportunity for emotional, mental and (of course) physical warmth. Getting cosy with your pets, kids or your partner will do wonders for your state-of-mind as well as keep you warm without whacking that thermostat up.

Install and Use a Programmable Thermostat

This assumes a level of luxury that not everyone has. Depending on finances and options there are various degrees of smart tech that will get the job done. The point is though that timing when your home heats, to what temperature and for how long will greatly aid the environment and (of course) your bank balance too.
