Weightlifting 101 for New Starters

Posted on 30/05/202430/05/2024 by The Busy Papa

Strength training should be part of any diverse workout routine. It’s not only good for building muscle but is also great for cardio and boosting overall fitness. You don’t have to have dreams of being big and buff to make adding strength training to your routine a smart thing to do. It should be part of a healthy routine, with a recommended two sessions a week complementing the 150 minutes of aerobic exercise you should be doing. If you want to give it a go, but you’re not sure how to get started, here are some tips that can help you.

Get Yourself Some Home Weights

The two main types of strength training you can try are free weights and machines. Machines are useful when you’re at the gym, but you won’t necessarily have space for them at home. If you want to be able to work out at home, a set of free weights will allow you to do it. They don’t have to be expensive, and they could actually save you a lot of money compared to going to the gym. But take some time to make sure you’re using them safely and effectively. It’s not rocket science, but you could be ineffective at best and injure yourself at worst if you’re not careful.

Take a Look at Your Diet

Strength training isn’t just about the equipment. Fueling your body to support your muscles and everything else is also an important part of lifting weights. You probably know that protein is a must for muscle growth, but it’s just as necessary to enjoy a balanced diet that fuels your body in other ways, such as giving you the carbs you need for energy. It’s also a good idea to look at supplements, with options like a complete non-SARMs metabolics bundle to give your diet a boost. Supplements can help fill in the gaps of what might be missing from your diet.

Benefit from Instruction

When you’re not sure what you’re doing, getting expert help is the first thing to do. You might think you can simply pick up weightlifting and strength training without help, but getting wrong is easy to do. If you’re joining a gym, make sure you attend an induction session or introduction so you can get to know the equipment and how to use it. You might even want to try a few sessions with a personal trainer, who can help you explore what you need to do to meet your goals.

Create a Balanced Routine

Setting up the right routine for weightlifting will help you achieve your goals while preventing injury. You’ll need to have a balanced routine with a focus on working on different parts of your body. But it’s not all about separating your workouts into “leg day” and “chest day”. Making strength training part of a routine that includes cardio and other types of exercise is important too.

Getting started with strength training doesn’t have to be intimidating. Just take the time to learn about how to do it safely and effectively.
