How To Get In Control Of Your Finances As A Parent

There are many skills that are required of parents. The ability to listen and guide, to survive sleepless nights, to teach your children important lessons that they can carry with them in later life. However, money management and budgeting skills are often forgotten about when it comes to parenting guides and books – meaning that new or first-time parents could quickly feel overwhelmed when it comes to finances (spoiler alert: kids are expensive).

With that in mind, here are some top tips that you can use to get in control of your finances as a parent.

Understand your budget

Budgeting is the first step towards achieving financial security, as it ensures that you aren’t spending money where you cannot really afford to. However, your budget changes significantly when you have children – as you suddenly have so many other things you need to pay for, from clothes to additional food and groceries. Thankfully, there are plenty of online budgeting guides for parents that can be used to get you on the right track. Alternatively, you could also download a budgeting app to keep you on track.

Don’t back away from big purchases, but do so carefully

When it comes to saving money, there is a lot of merit behind the idea of pulling back your purchasing as much as possible. However, there are some things that you simply need to spend large chunks of money on – such as when it comes to purchasing a family car. However, while large scale purchases may be unavoidable, there are still plenty of ways in which you can make them work within your budget. For example, there are plenty of compelling reasons to make your next car a used one instead of buying a completely new model. You could also cut down the cost of fuel by getting an electric car.   Additionally, you should also look out for companies that offer excellent price packages – whether you are attending fixed priced maintenance. If you are Looking for a local Citroen garage that does just that, check out ChippenhamMotor.

Don’t neglect your savings account

Another way in which you can drastically improve your finances is by setting up a savings account. However, it’s not enough to set up the account, deposit a small amount of money and hope for the best. You need to ensure that you add to it as often as your budget will allow if you want to see your savings grow and flourish. For example, you should try to put in a certain amount at the end of every month – even as little as £10 a month will make a difference. Furthemore, using a savings account stops you from spending money unintentionally.

Keep an eye out for promotions and freebies

When it comes to spending money, you should always keep an eye out for potential discounts or free things – after all, why pay for something that you could get for free? For example, if you were planning a family day out – plenty of large-scale attractions (museums, theme parks etc.) and restaurants offer ‘kids go free packages’ when accompanied by a paying adult.
