What is Colour Therapy?

What is Colour Therapy?

When it comes to personal wellbeing, there are a wide variety of therapies and options available out there. Choosing what approach to pursue depends entirely on the nature of your struggles and what options there are available to you. However, one approach that is not often considered, is colour therapy.

Also known as chromotherapy, colour therapy is sometimes used to handle stress and depression. Unlike many traditional mental health recovery treatments, it is completely non-invasive and holistic in nature.

If you’re familiar with Hinduism or Buddhism, you’ll already be aware of the concept of the seven chakras. Even if not, you might have come across the term if you’re especially familiar with yoga. Chromotherapy is based on concepts related to these chakras. The idea being that the seven colours from the rainbow, directly tie-in with the main chakras (or energy centres) of the body. Accepting that light moves in waves and that these waves have differing lengths and such; colour therapy works to realign the body’s energy with the appropriate colours. Naturally, this might be off-putting for some.

Chromotherapy treatment can be performed both personally and by a professional. It can be administered in the form of lights shone on the body, through acupressure, by wearing or by spending time in the presence of certain colours.

Whilst not everyone’s beliefs will line up with the science here and I suspect some may scoff at calling it science at all. From a psychological perspective, colour does have an effect on the brain (specifically mood) and whether or not the concept of chakras fits into your world view; this is kind of treatment is effective, especially when augmented with other forms of healing. So, if you’re looking for a new way to manage your mental wellbeing, it might be worth consulting a chromotherapist.
