Bloggers Behind the Screens with All About a Mummy

Bloggers Behind the Screens

Bloggers Behind the Screens is a monthly interview series, where fellow bloggers come together to answer a series of questions on a specific theme. This is a chance to get acquainted with a whole range of bloggers, some of whom you may not have encountered before, and learn a little more about them!

This month, we’re talking to bloggers about the very thing that makes them bloggers. Their blogs.

I am hosting All About a Mummy’s interview answers:

When did you start blogging and why?

I was pregnant with my second child when I started my blog. After a traumatic birth with my first daughter I was battling to get an elective C section on the NHS and the blog was a diary where I could vent my frustrations and anxiety. It all grew from there.

How did you come up with the name for your blog?

I wanted my blog to focus around my journey as a Mum but give me the freedom to write about all aspects of my life like baking and reading. All about a Mummy seemed to cover that off at the time.

What do you blog about? Has that changed from when you first started?

It has changed a lot. Initially it was very much focused on the kids but as they have grown up more and more of me has emerged.

Is your blog your job, your hobby or your side hustle?

I work pretty much full time from home as a Marketing Consultant, so my blog is a cross between a hobby and a side hustle. Most of the time I’m blogging simply because I enjoy it but the odd sponsored post is a nice way to earn a little extra spending money.

What is the best thing or experience that blogging has given you?

It’s given me somewhere to express myself which has been fantastic. We’ve also had some great family experiences like attending the launch of Dinosaurs in the Wild and product launches.

What is your favourite thing in the whole world to write about?

I love writing book reviews. Reading is a passion of mine and it’s great to be able to share what you love with an audience.

What skills (the more unusual the better!) has blogging taught you?

I’ve developed skills around resilience and bouncing back. When you begin blogging you have a ‘build it and they will come’ mentality when in fact it’s a lot of hard work to keep the momentum going and building an audience.

What is your favourite post from your blog? Give us the link and tell us why it’s your favourite.

Couple of years back I wrote a music series which I really enjoyed reminiscing over some of the songs which have shaped my life. I am going to revive it this year with some new music and also some of the kid’s favourites: https://www.allaboutamummy.co.uk/music-series.html

Have you ever been on TV or radio in your capacity as a blogger? If so, what for? If not, do you think it’s something you’d like to have a go at?

I’ve not had this experience (yet) but several years ago I was asked to go on This Morning to talk about life after a forceps delivery and the damage to the pelvic floor etc but I couldn’t make the date which I was gutted about.

What is your least favourite thing about blogging? There must be something you don’t like about it…

I don’t like the ranking systems. If you spend too much time looking at your position in charts or DA numbers you can quickly become obsessed and judge your perceived blog success by them (and against others). Then they change the way they calculate things and you can drop (or improve) overnight. It makes me stressed and anxious so I try to avoid comparison as much as possible!

Do you have any advice to give to anybody out there thinking of starting a blog right now?

Do it for the right reasons. Don’t do it to make money because yes, potentially you can make some money from it but if that is your sole reason for doing it you’ll get disheartened quickly. It is certainly not an easy or quick way to make money,

Where do you do most of your blogging? Do you have a home office, are you on the sofa or do you prefer to be out and about when writing posts?

Most of the time I’m at my desk. I write posts around my job when I have downtime or quieter days. Sometimes I draft out posts on my phone app then finish them off and add the images etc on the laptop.

Be honest. How many unwritten posts are in your drafts right now? How many are likely to see daylight?

There aren’t that many actually! I tend to try and finish one post before I start another. But there is one from five years ago I began writing on my daughter’s due date (she was born a couple of days earlier) which I must publish at some point.

What are you most excited about for your blog in the last six months or so of 2019? Anything awesome in the pipeline for the summer or are we forever winging it?

Generally I seem to wing everything! But we are doing a big house renovation over the next six months so I am looking forward to following that project on the blog.

Finally, what is your absolute favourite thing about being a blogger?

My favourite thing about being a blogger is having a space which is completely my own where I am my own editor, director and producer.

I love reading book reviews, I hardly get time to read nowadays (this saddens me, but 3 kids under 5 is a ‘challenge’) so before I invest precious time I choose a book based on reviews!
