Genki Covert Dock for the Nintendo Switch

Genki Covert Dock for the Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is a fantastic device; it combines the benefits of a home console with the convenience of a portable. The hybrid is an entertainment powerhouse and undeniably successful in terms of both concept and execution. However, The Switch isn’t without issues; the dock isn’t designed in the spirit of portability and both the Joy-Cons and aforementioned dock are prone to failure. Something I’ve learned the hard way. Fortunately, whilst most of the third-party alternatives to the dock are unsatisfactory at best and outright problematic at worst there is an awesome alternative out there worth your time and consideration.

Unpacking

The first thing that impressed me about the device was the packaging. Very minimal, extremely efficient and as little plastic as possible (the Genki Covert Dock excluded).

Genki Power Adaptor

Genki built their Covert Dock to spec with the official one. What that means is that the power output is the same, not risking the prospect of damage to the Switch over continued use. This is a genuine concern with some of the third-party options and a real headache when it comes to considering a replacement.

Genki Covert Dock

To look at, you might not see the Genki Covert Dock for what it is. Originally crowdsourced; the Switch Dock replacement doesn’t look like the hardware you are familiar with. The Covert Dock is designed to appear and function like a power brick, not dissimilar to the plug you charge your phone through.

Setting Up

Using the dock is incredibly simple; plug it into a power outlet, connect the HDMI to the TV and the USB-Type C connection to the Switch. From there, turn the TV on, the Switch on and be sure you’re on the right input.

Once set up, the Switch is ready to go and play on the TV at the same output settings as it would connected through the official Nintendo Switch Dock.

Two Point Hospital Genki

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Well made, efficient design and exemplary functionality.
  • Cheaper than the Official Nintendo Switch Dock.
  • Can be used to connect other devices to the TV.
  • Possible to charge other hardware through the Genki Covert Dock.
  • More portable than the Official Nintendo Switch Dock.
  • Has all of the functionality of the official dock and more.

Cons

  • Expensive compared to other third-party accessories.
  • Difficult to get in the UK without importing.
  • No stand, potentially leaving The Switch in a position where it could be pulled off the side by pets or kids.

My Conclusion

The Genki Covert Dock is a fantastic little gadget. There isn’t much to say, other than it works and it works well. Given that the official hardware is prone to failure and also isn’t portable, providing none of the cons are deal breakers for you then I wholeheartedly recommend Genki as not only a suitable replacement but an awesome upgrade.
