Things I Love About Living in St Albans

Throughout my life, I’ve lived in a number of different places. Since childhood, whether town or village; I never managed to find a place that felt like home for me. Simply put, I was always a bad culture fit. This feeling persisted most of my life and led me to wonder if I’d ever have that sense of happiness and pride that some do over where they live and what’s going on. Eventually, I did! I visited the city of St Albans and immediately fell in love with the town. A little while later; I made the move and found that there were even more things to love in St Albans than I realised, both in day-to-day living and convenience when it comes to hospital visits to my dad and such. Everything about the place spoke to and continues to speak to me personally.

So, what St Albans is to me; is home. The home  I always wanted and am grateful to now have. With that comes some pride and a fascination of the landscape and history surrounding the place. More than anything though, it brings me a sense of security and contentment every time I wake up and whenever I leave come back from a trip away. However, what is it that I actually love?

Active and Far Reaching Public Transport

I don’t know if I have ever mentioned this, but I hate driving. It makes me anxious and uncomfortable but it is a necessity. This means that when I can, public transport is a vital option for relieving that stress but still getting about.

Fortunately, only 17 minutes by train to London, with regular busses all over town and efficient options to travel all about the county of Hertfordshire; there are no shortage of options for day trips or commuting.

City Convenience, Rural Sights

One of the more shocking aspects of St Albans for me at first was just how easy it is to transition from town life to rural living. There are trees everywhere, excellent parks to visit and a number of delightful little villages on the outskirts.

You’re never far away from a supermarket or a night of fancy eating but also from a relaxing, nature-fuelled stroll through the woods.

Diversity

The town is incredibly diverse. With that comes more acceptance and understanding.

Just sitting around town, it makes me happy to see the variety of backgrounds, cultures and beliefs all coming together and interacting. It’s refreshing and inspiring amongst all of the bad news of late.

The facilities, shops, restaurants and takeaway options all represent this.

Broad Appeal

If geek culture is your thing, there is an active community and even a local comic con available.

Fascinated by history? Roman ruins to start with but so much more to explore.

Fine dining? Got you covered!

Love to dance? There are clubs, live music venues and a cool little pub for karaoke.

The list goes on, because this is a town steeped in diverse and engaging culture including theatre and an arthouse cinema but it extends out further into neighbouring towns, villages and of course, London too.

In Conclusion

The reason I love St Albans is that it has a community for everyone and openly stands for the ideals that I do. It is a town that enables me to be myself and is full of thousands of others trying to do the same. What it really comes down to though, is that it is my perfect culture fit.
